My husband had been saying for some time that he wanted to take me on a trip to Victoria, Canada. He had been as a kid, but didn't remember much. Well, when we saw that the Canadian Tenors were going to be performing at the Royal Theatre in Victoria, we decided to plan the trip. Always, last minute mind you. We got some of the last tickets in the Theatre, no worries though because we didn't need to see them, just to hear them.
We left Port Angeles, Washington and took a 1 1/2 hour ferry ride to Victoria. These are the pics along the way:
The only ones silly enough to be on the deck with freezing temps
Entering the Harbor
Sea planes were always taking off
I knew as we entered harbor that we were in a different place, you could just feel it
Later that night we had dinner at the Sticky Wicket Pub inside the Strathcona Hotel and afterwards took a stroll down to the water to see the holiday lights in the harbor and the festival of trees at the Empress Hotel.
The next day while exploring the city we came across
The Bells Christ Church Cathedral
"God So Loved the World"
"Jesus said I am come that they might have life"
an old cemetery across the street
We then walked about 8 blocks (in the freezing cold, willingly mind you)
check out the hand painted ceiling
this is formal dining
I loved this reproduction piece of Gothic furniture
The woodworking in this place was magnificent
why they put in details like this, we may never know
You don't see chairs like this much anymore
They were not afraid of color
The smoking room was our favorite room of all
Father Christmas was there for the kids
The views from the turret at the top of the house
Another great building we happened to pass
Market Square was filled with vendors selling there wares, there was even a guy selling roasted chestnuts. We just don't get that in Medford for the holidays.
There were carolers every time we turned around which really made it feel like the holidays. The entire time we were there it felt like Christmas. From the hot apple cider and fresh baked gingerbread waiting for us back at our hotel every afternoon and evening. It is the little details that allow you to feel it. Oh, by the way...we stayed at one of the nicest boutique hotels called the Magnolia Hotel and Spa I would highly recommend it if you go.
We had finally come to the main attraction, the Canadian Tenors performing live at the Royal theatre as I said above. I've got to tell you, that I've been to many, many live performances and shows over the years, but this one was right up there with the best of them. If you ever get a chance to see them, do not miss it. Even my husband loved it, and that was the best part for me.
Sadly it was time to head out, but even though we missed seeing the Buschart Gardens, because of time restrictions,
we felt like we had seen enough of this great little place.
Farewell for now, I hope to have lots more to tell,
when I start to feel just a tad bit better.
